So, how’s the season going so far, folks?

Pleased to see that our club, Richmond, appears to be competitive again after a couple seasons mired in the basement. Hard to say with certainty so early in the season, but the East pool seems to be somewhat weaker than the West.

Only complaint thus far was our team not getting confirmation of a Sunday away game time until mid-week. As a result, we ended up with only 2 subs (one, a call up), as several players couldn’t change work shifts at such a late point in time. Not overly impressed ‘bout the late confirmation from opponent, but as they say “It is what it is.”

The three yellow accumulation rule seems a little excessive to me for an 18 match season. Would make more sense to me to have a “good behaviour” rule in place whereby, for example, five games of being card-free would see a player’s card total be reduced by one. With reffing being as inconsistent from match to match, we had multiple players sitting on two yellows by late November.

Do you mean by the BCCSL, or by the parents/players that have many other things to arrange and organize on the weekend? I'm not disputing that field allocation is a complex and time-consuming undertaking -- but the majority of clubs are able to provide a reliable schedule with at least one week's notice, if not more.

I hear ya loud and clear.

The league rules say "Thursday" - it might specify "evening" but I can't recall. It's in the league rule book anyway.

Yes, most clubs, including mine, seem to be able to schedule ahead of time nowadays. But it does appear not all are able. My guess is that's due to ref availability.

Were you playing a team from the old District 5 (Fraser Valley)? Even last season almost no clubs (certainly not in the u11 age group) at all posted schedules ahead of time.

It was North Delta. Might have involved some coordination with the Girls' side, since the Delta U18 Boys matches are on Sundays -- but since Sunday matches are by far and away the outlier, all the more reason to have come up with a time with enough notice. It may be just a case of me just being grumpy this morning, I dunno...o_O

lol grumpiness is a special friend of mine!

They probably have internal issues and that's just the way it is. Field space, ref availability, coordinator issues, computer issues, issues with the City etc etc etc etc.

Great to hear your team is off to a positive start. I coach the Langley team and there certainly is lots of change in both the east and west pools. Interested to see your team placed on the east side. It appears a few teams moved into Metro, while many moved down a division. I share your frustration with game days. Not sure how to improve it, but it would be nice to have a way to know if a team plays home games on saturdays or sundays. This would help those who work as last minute announcements are tough in this age group. In fact I believe I am sitting on 11 tomorrow due to not knowing the day of the game ahead and ending with a late time that conflicts with restaurant service work.

Thx for your reply. Interesting to share views/opinions — just to get a “reality check” of sorts from different clubs/districts. Haven’t been following metro much at all this year... who has moved into metro that you know of? Last season, over in the west pool there were easily three Div 1 teams that could have been very competitive in metro imo.... VUFC, and two North Van sides. Or were the teams you’re referring to from your side of the Fraser?
With this being the final year of youth play, all I’d really like to see is a fairly well-balanced Div 1 pool with everyone competitive. Only 2 matches in, so it’s hard to know for sure, but so far both of our matches could have gone either way.

two teams moved into metro. North Vancouver Surge and CCB Akal. Many of the weaker div 1 teams moved to division 2 so hoping you are correct on balance. Interested in how the schedule plays out after October 20th. I do like that teams will be mixed by strength after Christmas but uncertain what November, December looks like.

Mixed after Christmas? I was told re-tiering is happening again after Thanksgiving. May only be the case for Super 8.

Oh man...some egregious fouls (yellow worthy) yesterday from BOTH sides.... not a single card produced over the 90mins. Predictably, this resulted in the teams coming together in a pushing, grabbing, shoving scuffle late in second half. No cards produced in that altercation either. Unfortunately, the ref slowly lost a good measure of control over the match. I honestly think she might have forgotten her cards, and tried to manage without them. Kudos to Guildford for posting a well-deserved win.

Re-tiering happens after Thanksgiving but I do not believe this includes mixing groups by geography. After Christmas the mix i was referring to is the league championship format of placing teams in pods of 6 based on standings not geography, hence mixing east and west.

Ah yes the cups. If they do it the same as 5 District has been in recent years the re-tiering for those is very good.

Oh joy... Our Coastal Cup draw for round 1 is a team we’ve played no less than 5 times already this season, including league, playoffs, and tournaments. Damn you soccer gods...

how about this for joy, second year in a row we finish finish first on the east side. Random draw saw us place 2nd place team from east side in round one. This year random draw, playing 1st place team from West side. Winner likely gets 2nd place team from west side. Teams in the top half have a cake walk. how i wish the regular season meant something and seedings were used.

How do top teams qualify for provincial cup? Only finishing 1-2 in Coastal Cup?

Metro uses seeding, wonder why lower tiers don't? Not sure how I feel about seeding. A few years ago I coached a team that finished 2nd last in our league, but we went many months unbeaten to finish the year and by the time we got to Coastal Cup 1st round we were doing well and were drawn vs. the #1 seed out of the District 4. We beat them 7-3, and it was a cake walk. We then lost the next round against the 3rd or 4th placed District 4 team 2-1 on top shots against. It happens. I suppose in the end I like random draws and would prefer Metro (nor BCSPL) had them in the coastal cup.
