Trinity Western Canada West Preview

2014-15 CW Regular Season Record: 10-1-1
2014-15 CW Playoff Record: 3-0
2014-15 Overall Record: 13-1-1
Last CW Title/Total CW Titles: 2014/5
Last CIS Title/Total CIS Titles: 2013/4

Number of New Players: 10

Key Recruits: Quinn Hardstaff (D/Calgary/EP Scarlett HS), Jenaya Robertson (M/Delta, B.C./Delview SS), Rachel Hutchinson (F/Cloverdale, B.C./Clayton Heights), Nicole Bolder (F/Calgary/Bishop O’Brien HS).

Number of departing players: 8

Key Losses: Jennifer Castillo (D/5), Jenna Di Nunzio (M/5), Jessica King (F/5), Kristen Santema (D/5)

Key performer: Ally Williamson. With Williamson taking over in the TWU net, the Spartans goaltending duties are in good hands. The fourth-year netminder, who sat out last year, as per CIS transfer rules after coming over from UBC, gives the Spartans top-class stability on the back end. The two-time Canada West all-star and former CIS Second Team All-Canadian (2013) will be a critical piece in this year’s puzzle and will instill confidence into a relatively inexperienced Spartans defensive back four.

Coach Quote: “I’m pretty excited about a new group that is young and energetic with players how have great potential to come in and fill some key spots in our lineup. Some of the inexperience may cause a few more bumps in the road, but overall, I love the group and it’s a really good group of girls to work with. In some ways, it’s the beginning of a new cycle, so there are a lot of questions to be asked and answered, but I’m optimistic that if we can work hard and overcome some hiccups along the way, we have a chance to be pretty formidable.”- TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh

Key storyline: Despite the loss of four key starters from last year’s roster, including CIS Player of the Year Jessica King and defensive stalwart Jennifer Castillo, the Spartans are once again gearing up for a run at a national championship. After losing in last year’s CIS gold medal match against Laval, the Spartans return this fall with a new look, a younger vibe and a hunger to get back to the top of the mountain. In Langley, the goal is always a championship and while the team will no doubt experience some growing pains along the way, the Spartans sights are still very much set on finishing atop the CIS heap.

UFV: (1-0-1) After beating a strong UBC Thunderbirds (2-1), and playing Victoria to a scoreless draw, the Cascades have gotten off to a strong start to their season.

Head to Head: The Heat lost to Fraser Valley on both occasions last season as the record from stands at (0-2).

Players to look out for : Jade Palm (1 goal this season), Shelby Beck ( 2 assists this season), Monika Levarsky ( 1 goal this season ).

Key Player : Forward Shelby Beck has been instrumental for the Cascades, providing two assists this season. The Cascades will depend upon Beck’s creativity as the aim to overthrow UBC Okanagan at their home turf.

Key performer: Kayla Klim. The Cascades’ fourth-year goalkeeper is coming off an outstanding 2014 campaign which saw her finish fourth in Canada West with an .841 save percentage (with six shutouts) during the regular season. The Burnaby native turned in a spectacular performance in the playoffs, backstopping the Cascades to the Canada West silver medal and a fourth-place result at CIS nationals. She also won the conference’s Student-Athlete Community Service Award.

Coach Quote: “We’re excited about what this year could be. Having gotten a taste of it last year, by no means are we satisfied. If anything, it just deepens the hunger for more success and taking last year’s accomplishments even further. But we know it’s a tough journey. There’s so many good teams in our conference.” – Cascades head coach Rob Giesbrecht

Key storyline: Coming off a memorable 2014 campaign which saw them earn the Canada West silver medal and finish just shy of the podium at CIS nationals, the Cascades welcome back nearly every key contributor. Klim is supported by a veteran defensive unit featuring Jade Palm, Dayle Jeras and Tristan Corneil. Kara Delwo – a Canada West first team all-star in 2014 – is a defensive ace who covers acres of territory in the midfield. Strikers Shelby Beck and Monika Levarsky, who tied for the team lead with six goals apiece during the regular season, are back to spearhead the attack.
