Re-tiering

Interesting u16 has two divisions. The last two years in u16-17 we had something like 16-18 teams in the league yet they kept it to just 1 league table - why are these things so seemingly random!?

Random indeed. U15 Div 1 has 20 teams. It would seem to make sense to break that into 2 divisions. I would love to see smaller divisions and play everyone in your divison twice, home and away. (Yeah, fantasy, I know....).

I don't like being in a division of 16 teams, playing 11 of them, not seeing the other 5...that makes no sense to me.

Do the games before re-tiering count in the overall season standings?

After league is all done, I take it there are league cup competitions, correct? Does everyone get to play in a cup competition (5DL, 4DL, MSL)?

Cheers,

Regs.

You have pre-season tiering (thanksgiving) and then District Cup tiering (December break). All district teams play in their own cup, albeit in lettered (a,b,c, etc) rather than div 1,2,3 groupings. This allows for groupings of around 6 teams each from div 1 down to div 4.

ONLY Div 1,2 teams (as of thanksgiving tiering) get to play for the provincial cup.

There is a league cup competition. In 5DL, each age group gets sorted after New Years into groups of 5-7 teams. A round robin is played, and the top two play in a Cup Final.

When I coached in 4DL in 1997-2005, the competition was different. You played a couple league games, then had a break for Cup games. As teams were eliminated, Cup games moved to Wednesday or Thursday nights. You potentially only played 1 Cup game, but you had way more league games - September through March.

District 5 used to be like this a few years ago as well. When the groups were still called gold, silver, etc. I remember we had cup games scattered throughout the season.

While I'm not a big fan of a shortened "season" Sept thru Dec, I do like the fact that every team starts fresh again in January, and if you've had a weak winter season, you are grouped with teams where you have a chance to compete. That has to be rewarding for some kids.

This why I advocate regular tiering. You may start off slow, get tiered down, then do well, and get grouped higher again at x-mas. I have seen teams jump a couple of groups up at x-mas. The only downlfall with this is that you could miss provincials if you have a strong team.

I have also seen very strong teams get tiered in the middle of league play if they are quite strong. Rare, but it does happen.

I can't imagine anyone likes that set-up. So why do the district board guys think it makes sense?

I agree - two small divisions but play everyone in your division twice makes way more sense.

I agree. This change in D5 makes a lot of sense, and is a great move. Well done to the district folks.

Why would you miss provincials if you had a strong team? The tiering after Christmas only pertains to district cup (in D5). Provincial/coastal cup is still organized within each district.

Coastal Playdowns only included Div 1 and 2 teams. You could be tiered down at thanksgiving to D3. Then you wouldnt qualify for the playdowns even if you moved a few groups up for District cup.

Last year we moved up to play D2 teams after xmas, but we were not in Coastal playdowns, but the teams that moved downward were still in playdowns.

Provincial Cup draws are done in November. First games are in December, before the retiering for cup play. So only teams in Div 1 and 2 at the beginning of the year are in the draw.

What district plays any provincial cup games in December? I've never seen any played earlier than spring.

We are getting Coastal Cup and Provincials mixed up.

Qualifying (Play downs) for Coastal Cup start in January. Last year they started to take place 1 week before District cup play. Coastal Cup is the qualifying competition for Provincials. So even though provincials dont start until spring, coastal playdowns start sooner, and you cant get into coastal play downs unless you are in Div 1 or 2 as of thanksgiving break.

Very few changes - the two teams I listed earlier didn't get moved at all... How bad does a team have to destroy its opposition before thanksgiving to get moved up??
