There are a few members here that have gone through the mill from the sounds of it, so I have a question. Mountain United just finished picking there U13 intake team. They definitely went a certain direction in the players they picked, all highly skilled foot dribblers that have the tendency to hang on to the ball way too long. Players that displayed fewer touches and the ability to move the ball quickly were overlooked or under appreciated, not sure yet. Having watched these kids develop over the last number of years, I tend to see the kids that don't pass often don't seem to become passers and after four or five years they still have the same desire to out dribble everyone and lose the ball before passing. I believe the intention of the MU coach is that he will be able to take these players and develop them into elite play-makers building on their technical skills. So far I haven't seen that happen. From my understanding of Euro academies they have an appreciation of those ball dribblers but also look for the passers and movers. By having a mix of both you build a solid foundation of a group to work with. So the question, is this what has been common for BCSPL teams, just taking one type of player and not seeing the quality of the others? Is this why Canada lags behind from the rest of the world, that elite play-makers can't be taught how to do it, you either can or can't. I know a number of kids that were cut that can dribble and have the same elite foot skills, but because they understand the game and think that passing and movement is far more effective, they don't show as well and are missed. Everyone's thoughts would be highly appreciated. Signed confused.

If they are doing assessments properly they've been given a list of names based on year long recommendations - then whittled down the selections from those. I would hope they haven't picked players at this level from a few trial days.

I know what you mean though - I have a CM (u11) that is dominant at CM. Does nothing fancy. But never puts a foot wrong. He'll get overlooked because of it if the assessors aren't paying attention.

Not bad at all. Since its a new league it would be nice if they either started fresh record keeping from this past year on or add the records from the districts other than dist 4.

I would prefer the fresh start.

Site is done by the same guy/company that designed soccer express and port moody soccer websites.

Thumbs up with the link back to BCSC!

That'd be great - but what are the odds District 5 kept historical records? ;)

Am told 3 District is gone (u11-12 select in Fraser Valley) and are joining BCCSL. So I had a read through their rule book. Permits are no longer a thing. Kids can move up tiers in age, or up an age, without any signed documents - just bring their BC Soccer Photo ID. This is a fantastic change! Confirmed this is the new rule for me by Gregor Young on twitter.

Finally, some logic!

To this end for my u12 tier 1 team we've selected 10, and put 14 in tier 2. Every week will call-up 2 kids from tier 2. This will be planned in advance, not ad hoc. Very excited to be able to do this!

To play devil's advocate, I'm curious if you (@TKBC) passed your plan by anyone to see if it truly falls "within the spirit" of the purpose of the policy as it is written? Perhaps in your conversation with Gregor... I think it's nice to be able to do what you propose by the way...

For readers - Section 15 --- "Intra-Club Permits or Playing Up Policy will be changed to the BCCSL Fluid Roster Policy (FRP)"

Yes. My Technical Director approved it. Can't imagine any scenario in which a TD would argue against such a move. So far every parent on tier 1 and 2 is happy with the plan. Tier 2 kids will have that extra motivation, tier 1 kids will see what those kids are doing to get rewarded with such a move - of course this policy goes to benefit u12 tier 1 as well because they may get a chance to play some u13 on call-up.

Not sure "Fluid Roster" is really the right name because you can't send tier 1 kids down to tier 2....but the intent is excellent and it's a great first step.

Also, there was no conversation with Gregor. I put a post on twitter about being happy with this change and he replied that it was a confirmed new policy and that 13 TD's helped develop it. That was the extent of the "conversation" with him.

Hmmm... looks like the first appreciable rainfall in the past two months is predicted for Saturday -- it must be the start of the youth soccer season! ;)

Aaarg! After getting past its initial teething troubles, the BCCSL found its footing, and seemed to operate pretty decently for the 18/19 season - well, until now.

This season’s playoff scheme is a little different, with six teams playing off in a round robin format to determine the top two who’ll play in the final. Enter frigid weather and field closures this weekend... On the BCCSL website there’s a semi-non-commital posting suggesting that cancelled matches may well NOT be rescheduled, and that in the case of teams ending up with differing numbers of matches played, a Points Per Game system would be employed. Say what??

We’ve currently played 3 games, with 2 remaining to be played (including the match scratched this weekend). Let’s figure out a way to wrap this up fairly, shall we? Without everyone getting the chance to play everyone else in our pool, there’s a huge imbalance — at least in our U18 Div 1 (Group 2) pool, where there’s a significant strength-of-opponent difference between top and bottom of the six teams. An incomplete round-robin, or PPG scenario would be unfair. Let’s assume we’re a mid-table team in the pool, and our first three games were vs the pool’s #1, #2, and #3 teams. Our likely points total will look a LOT different than if we’d played #6, #5, and say, #3.

I would hope the BCCSL would make EVERY effort to try to get this right. We’re talking two matches — there have to be enough options on the table for the BCCSL to work this out equitably!

Well, my U17 daughter's team had their last game on Sunday cancelled as both teams, officials, were at the field. The previous game had finished, all the while very light snow had been coming down. Burnaby closed all fields about that time (noon). I heard North Van had done likewise. Closures around the rest of the lower mainland were mixed with some afternoon games that Sunday being played from what I can tell. And, the likelihood of rescheduling last Sunday's game seems slim :-(

As it turns out, her coach got today's away game (all fields at the opponent's city were closed as of Thursday, quite early IMO) rescheduled to their home turf. It's supposed to start in a few minutes and I see light snow coming down... 2nd cancelled game???

Sounds like you have it even worse than we do! I take it that your game today got called off / abandoned, or did they play through the snowfall? Snowing like crazy right now in Vancouver.

Indeed, the ref stopped the U17 game 10 minutes in..

My younger U15 girl's Sunday game was cancelled early as their opponent's district had closed all fields for the weekend (on Thursday) and our coach/manager couldn't find an alternate venue here. So they have 2 cancelled LC games too.

Judging from the current conditions, and and fact that flurries are in the forecast for Thursday too, I'd speculate that we've seen the end of playoff round-robin play at this point -- with finals to be based off playoff standings to date. Season for U13-U18 is scheduled to wrap up on the 24th, according to the BCCSL website.

This is adopted from District 5, which had been running it's "league championship" this way for a few years now. It's an outstanding way to finish the season IMO as it gives every team something new to play for.

What is your proposed solution? With cities closing fields due to snow getting the games in will depend on that. More snow is predicted. When are the Finals scheduled to be played?

The league could require the home team to get the game in if the fields open in their community before the final - say no later than 3 days before the scheduled final? This would/might require week night games. This would mean fairly late kickoffs or teams losing practice times (or of course schedule the game in the usual 1.5 hours of practice time the home team has - would impact re: warm-up and the practice after the match of course - juggling would be necessary).
