League Standards

OK, so BCSPL has standards. Whether those standards are measured, met, maintained, ensured etc is a different discussion.

My question is, why not put MSL and Div 1 also under the BCSPL banner as the 2nd, 3rd div, and 4th (a lot of MSL appear to have an A and B div already)? Give them standards, but of course reduce the standards in div 2 and div 3. No need for forced promotion/relegation. I say if two teams smash it in Div 3, then if they can meet the standards to play Div 2 then they go up and vice versa. But if they smash it and can't meet the standards they don't go up.

No promotion to Div 1. That's a closed league. But, putting all the leagues under 1 banner can give a clearer path for all, and a clearer example of standards that need to be met.

BCSPL is not the solution to all our problems. But, it's a start and has the correct theory.

Could go on and on and on....love to hear some of your guys' thoughts on this whether you agree or not.

What type of standards are you speaking of?

General level of play?

Coaching standards?

Administrative standards?

MSL has A&B but I think it is a matter of grouping teams to keep groups to an even number of teams if possible with x-over play, but not a split based on skill or level.

Once you add more teams and divisions to BCSPL I'm pretty sure we would be in the same position with regard to management of the league and possibly also lose that aura of being an elite league because now you have 1-4 levels rather than just the top level.

I think the key is that there is a clear pathway for movement, some clubs are better at this than others. I know SU drops and pick ups player for the BCSPL regularly ( at least twice a season). Clubs need to do a better job of promotion among their MSL , DIV 1 etc...two many coach controlled teams in the Div 1 , Div 2 levels. Also there a two many clubs trying to put a team at these levels when they don't have the proper talent to be competitive.
There needs to be a clear mandate, which there is , then there needs to be transparency and communication about it.

The problem is, there are too many handshake deals with coaches. Groups that get together, band together. So you have a coach developing kids for a coach who is there, not based upon his track record, but his allegiance to a certain group within the club. And you have these guys at all levels.

Theoretical

You have one of those coaches at div 1, and one at div 4, maybe even div 3. You are sitting in div 2, pushing your kids up every year, developing fresh athletic players without experience. But nothing comes up from the div's below, so you recruit on your own. You coach in the summer hoping to have a decent squad for the fall. All of this work is done by you. The club has given you nothing. And then some of the players who you moved up, who you know are equal or better than the team they go to, sit on the bench because that coach shows allegiance to his long term players. So every year players are going to a coach who treats his players poorly, yelling and screaming, etc. To a coach with a HIGH turnover for the wrong reason.

So my question, is this, do I still promote players within the club? Do I lookout for myself and my players? Are they in a better situation where they are, playing good minutes, or send them up to sit on the bench?

Really, if we wanted this to work, there should be set standards for coaches, and ALL teams within a CLUB should be reformed each year. Furthermore, no club shoud be able to take a full team on (off season or otherwise), and only 3-5 players max from any other clubs team, and then only if they have room on a team of equal or higher calibre.

League, coaching, ref, club, NFP status, trials, and yes general level of play.

The top level would still be closed, in regards to what I suggested in my original post. I do agree the top level has to be kept to a small number of teams.

I agree. So what is the hold-up with BCSA mandating standards? Or even CSA.

I am not really sure about your post. Yes, as a "lower level" coach if a player is good enough to move up. Encourage them to. If the coach at the higher level is not cutting it that isn't your problem, it's a club/parent problem. You can only do what's right.

"reforming" clubs is only good in theory - not in reality. Kids will quit if they can't play with their friends they have been with for 2-3-4+ years in the name of "fairness".

I think the answer to your issue is this. At MSL and BCSPL level the player selection is should be dictated by the TD. At Div 1-2 the TD must over-see the trials, but selections up to the coach. BUT, the TD has veto rights and can say if a player is not good enough.
